So You Think You Can Dance returns for Season 14 on Monday June 12th. Woot! This season the show returns “back to basics” and all contestants will be adults aged 18 and older. We asked former SYTYCD contestant, JJGirl Alexia Meyer what she hopes to see on the show this summer. Check out Alexia’s thoughts and hopes for the new season below!
“Being a contestant on Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance was absolutely incredible. Nothing can truly compare to what I learned and experienced while on the show. While SYTYCD is considered a reality TV “competition,” I like to think of it as an amazing training program. In addition to the countless hours of dancing, I met and worked with other incredible and inspiring dancers and choreographers, I learned how to work with a camera, and I learned the importance of character development. One of my favorite routines was the duet I did with Neptune, choreographed by Dave Scott. In the dance we had a HUGE wall we had to do choreography on. My favorite thing about the dance was the crazy characters he pulled out of us. It was quite the challenge, but such a fun and rewarding experience.
I can’t believe that SYTYCD is on to season 14 this summer. I think SYTYCD has done a great job at changing things each season to keep the longevity of the show. Here are three things I would LOVE to see on this upcoming season.
1. Change in judges
I’m really excited to hear that Mary Murphy and Vanessa Hudgens are joining the panel of judges this season. Mary is very passionate and supportive of dance and I absolutely love that. She is part of what makes SYTYCD the show that it is! And who doesn’t love the “hot tamale train”?! 🙂 Vanessa Hudgens will also be a great new addition. One of my favorite quotes comes from her: “I love finding things that scare me and doing them. That’s how you grow.” She has inspired me to go after things that have made me extremely nervous (like auditioning for the Broadway show CATS). I’m excited to hear what type of feedback she’ll give the dancers. And lastly, I know Misty Copeland guest judged a few seasons back and I think it would be awesome if they brought her back again. Misty is obviously relevant in the dance world, but she also has been successful enough in the world for the “non-dancer” viewers to know who she is and value her opinion as well. She is well educated and also very classy, which is something that is much needed in a female role model/judge.
2. Character development.
As an assistant/teacher/judge for a convention on the weekends, I get to see a lot of what studios present on stage during competition. There are so many dances where the choreography is beautiful, the dancers are stunning, but there is no real story telling or meaning to the performance. I think this next season of SYTCYD could really focus on the character development of each dance. It will push the dancers to make their emotions come before the steps, allowing for a more honest piece for the audience. I think more of that could inspire dancers and dance teachers back at their home studios to do the same.
I think we often times think there’s a specific type of dancer that fits the mold for SYTYCD. In some ways this is valid, but I think it would be awesome to see more diversity on the stage by doing more solos. In the past, solos weren’t really performed till the top 10. I think all the dancers that make the top 20 should be able to do solos in the beginning of the live performances to showcase to America who they are individually. This will help viewers identify each dancer by getting to see them in their own unique style.
I can’t wait to tune in on Monday!”
