Follow these beauty tips to keep you feeling good and looking fine both behind the curtain and on center stage.
Set your Stage
Sweat from heat, movement and changing costumes can be rough on your stage makeup. It’s important to prime, prep and set your canvas so your makeup stays put throughout your performance (or multiple performances.)
Primer: Skin Primers are a must in a dancer's makeup routine. They go on before your makeup and smooth your skin/fill in your pores so that the application of your foundation is even. Some primers have color and texture correcting elements for different skin types. Our recommendations: Smashbox Photo Finish or NYX Angel Veil
Eyelid Primer: These are magic potions that allow your eyeshadow to stay as vibrant and pigmented as the moment you put it on. Your shadow will be free from creasing, greasing or rubbing off. Our recommendation: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
Setting Spray: A setting spray locks in your makeup and is extra nice for dryer skin types to create a more moisturized glow. And they usually smell delicious. Our recommendations: Jane Iredale Balance Hydration Spray (natural and organic) or Urban Decay All-Nighter
PUT A LID ON IT
When applying your fake lashes, apply the glue to your eyelid FIRST, vs directly to the lash. This is a helpful trick that allows you to control the placement of the lash with more precision. Use a angled brow or lip brush to apply your eyelash glue directly to your lash line, wait 20 seconds for the glue to dry slightly and then apply the lash.
Liquid to Matte in 3 seconds flat
Liquid to matte lipsticks are all the beauty rage right now because they are vibrant, highly- pigmented, and last FOR HOURS! Before applying, be sure to hydrate your lips with a chapstick or a balm. Blot away, and then apply your favorite lipliner, followed by the liquid lipstick. If the matte finish is still too drying, apply a light layer of balm or a creamier gloss over your lips. Our recommendation: LimeCrime Liquid Velvetines
KEEP IT CLEAN WITH NATURAL HAIRSPRAY
Since we inadvertently share hairspray fumes with those around us, spraying in close proximity to others backstage in the dressing room, we can reduce the harm by opting for more natural sprays. Try these organic hairsprays to be friendlier to your body, your fellow dancers and the environment. Our recommendation: Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Hairspray
BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER
All. GLITTER. EVERYTHING! We’re used to it getting everywhere, but where does it go after? Traditional glitter is actually not biodegradable, so every particle of glitter ever used is still floating out there somewhere in the world, likely interfering with our eco-system. Actual "all glitter everything" may not be as glam as it sounds. But fortunately, we have BIODEGRADABLE glitter! Consider these revolutionary glitters that don’t cause any harm to the environment. You can mix them with gel, your highlighter and face cream to apply. Use eyelash glue to adhere bigger, chunkier glitters and to make sure they stay put while you dance. Our recommendation: BioGlitz
COconut oil ery'thing
Coconut oil has seemingly endless uses in our lives, and it’s no different when it comes to our beauty routine. It’s an amazing natural moisturizer for our skin, hair and nails, but did you know that you can use it to take off your makeup? Coconut oil is amazing for taking off lipstick and shadow. Put a small amount of coconut oil on the area you want to remove and wipe away with a cotton ball, towel or makeup wipe. Just remember that a little goes along way.
Oh Baby, BABY WIPES
Baby wipes are lifesavers for just about anything! They are the perfect remedy for freshening up on the spot. Use them to wipe away sweat, oils or makeup, before, during and after your performance. These are go-tos to keep in your dance bag for class, as well. Buy in bulk and share with your friends! Our recommendation: Fresh Cucumber Baby Wipes
