If you’re in the heart of competition season, it can be easy to experience fatigue, burn out or at least dreams of a tropical vacation. These are some helpful tips to keep you focused during competition season.
-
Reflect
This is something you’ve worked for all year. It’s good to see where you’ve come from in order to appreciate where you are. So give yourself some credit for your progress and growth
-
Be present
Seems kind of crazy to work for something all year only to wish to be somewhere else, but this is human nature. The more you can be where you are, doing what you’re doing, the more rich the experience and the better you will be at competition! Allow yourself to enjoy the moments, even when it’s hard and you want to go home. You’ll get to when the time if right and you’ll soon be thinking about next competition season
-
Get some REST
When you’re not rehearsing or competing, the most important thing you can do for your mind, body and soul is to get legitimate rest. This may mean limiting screen time, or saying no to hanging with friends. Getting sleep and relaxation is vital for your body to recover, be ready to compete and for your general well-being and happiness.
-
Vent
Tell someone how you’re feeling or write it in a journal. It’s okay to say that you’re tired or overwhelmed. Sometimes having a good cry and getting it off our chest is just what we need to feel better and ready to get back into the game.
-
Limit distractions
Your focus should be on you, your dances, your team or company, and all the things that make you feel healthy and good. Social media or school drama can be a waste of time and energy, when you really need to reserve it for competition! Be smart and make good choices and you’ll continue to stay focused and motivated through the duration of competition season.
-
Laugh
You have to be able to laugh at yourself and stay light in the face of stress or overwork. Be sure to laugh often with your friends or even at yourself!
